I wanted to challenge myself by re-designing a selection of poems by Mark Doty. With the words being extraordinarily powerful, it was essential that the design did not get in the way of the reading experience, but remained easy to navigate.
The clear and unfussy nature of Akzidenz Grotesk, paired with Caslon for the body, makes for an interesting contrast on the page – clearly delineating the poem itself from any navigational text. Generous margins and spacing keep the page uncluttered and fresh, ensuring the focus is kept on the poem – particularly useful if the book is needed for a live reading.
